Solar Costs, Incentives and ROI: The Complete Topic Guide

FAQ
How much does solar cost?
It varies by system size, region and installer. Compare total installed cost across at least three quotes, not the hardware line.
Is the federal tax credit a rebate?
No. It reduces tax you owe. If your liability is smaller than the credit, you cannot use it all in that year.
What is a solar dealer fee?
A charge the lender takes from the installer to fund a low advertised interest rate. It is added to the price you finance.
Do solar panels increase home value?
Owned systems generally can. Leased systems and power purchase agreements usually cannot, because you do not own the equipment.
How long is the payback period?
It depends on your rate, your export tariff and your consumption pattern. Run your own numbers in the payback calculator.
Should I lease or buy?
Buying almost always costs less in total. Leasing suits households with little tax liability who want no upfront cost.
