Routine care
Solar needs less maintenance than almost any other equipment on a house. What it does need is a look at the data and an occasional inspection.
- Panel cleaning — when cleaning genuinely pays and when it is over-sold
- Home panel maintenance — the realistic annual schedule
- Inspection checklist — what to look at, and what needs a professional
- Monitoring apps — how to spot a problem before it costs you a season
- Bird proofing — stopping nesting under the array before it starts
Which guide fits you
| Situation | Read this first |
|---|---|
| Production is lower than expected | Underperformance diagnosis |
| System stopped completely | Inverter troubleshooting |
| Storm or hail just passed | Hail damage |
| Snow on the array | Snow removal |
| Installing it yourself | DIY installation |
| Cabin, van or boat | Off-grid cabin solar |
| HOA is objecting | HOA rules |
Weather and seasonal issues
- Winter maintenance — what changes when the days get short
- Snow removal — when to clear an array and when to leave it
- Cold climate solar — why cold weather helps output but hurts hardware
- Hail damage — ratings, inspection and the claim process
- Hurricane-rated systems — why attachments fail before modules do
- Do panels work in cloud? — how much output you actually keep
- Off-grid solar in winter — the season that decides your battery sizing
Problems and repair
- Underperformance diagnosis — a step-by-step method with a causes-by-likelihood table
- DIY panel repair — what you can safely do and what you must not
- Inverter troubleshooting — reading fault codes by category
- Off-grid troubleshooting — diagnosing a system with no grid to compare against
- Fire risk — the real causes and how they are prevented
- Warranty claims — which of the three warranties applies, and the labour gap
DIY installation
Self-installing is legal in many places and genuinely achievable. The parts that go wrong are electrical code and roof penetrations, not lifting panels.
- DIY panel installation — the honest scope of a self-install
- Professional install process — what a proper installation sequence looks like
- DIY off-grid kits — pre-matched components and their limits
- Essential off-grid gear — the shopping list that actually matters
Off-grid living
- Off-grid system guide — sizing, components and real costs
- Off-grid cabin solar — designing for intermittent occupancy
- Living off-grid — what daily life on solar actually requires
- Off-grid maintenance — the routine that keeps a bank healthy
- Solar vs generator — the honest comparison for long outages
- Tiny house solar — why the heating decision comes before the panels
Mobile and marine
- RV solar — sizing and installation for a motorhome
- Van life solar — energy budget first, then battery, then panels
- Marine solar — salt corrosion, rig shading and tinned wiring
Home systems and efficiency
- Are home systems reliable? — what the field data shows
- Residential panel efficiency — what matters on a real roof
- Solar vs grid power — comparing the two honestly
- Home renewable solutions — the wider set of options
- Smart home and solar — automation that actually saves money
- Solar plus heat pumps — the strongest home electrification pairing
- Solar attic fans — when they help and when they cost you money
- HOA rules — your rights and the usual objections
FAQ
How often should solar panels be cleaned?
In most temperate climates rain does the work. Cleaning pays in dusty, pollen-heavy or very dry regions, or under trees.
Do solar panels need annual servicing?
Not in the way a boiler does. Check the monitoring data regularly and inspect mounting and flashing every few years.
Can I install solar panels myself?
In many jurisdictions yes, with permits and inspection. Electrical code and roof penetrations are where self-installs most often fail.
My production dropped. What first?
Check the inverter status and the breakers, then compare a full year of data against a model. Start with the diagnosis guide.
Should I remove snow from my panels?
Usually not by hand. The risk of damage and injury outweighs a few days of winter production.
Does hail break solar panels?
Modern panels are tested against hail impact and usually survive. Damage tends to show as production loss rather than visible cracks.
